Spinal surgery rehabilitation in Adelaide
Physiotherapy before and after spinal surgery is one of the highest-value interventions available to improve surgical outcomes, reduce recovery time and support a safe return to activity. At The MSK Studio, pre and post-operative spinal rehabilitation is delivered with the same clinical depth and individual attention that defines everything we do.
We communicate directly with your surgeon throughout the process, before your procedure, after discharge, and at key milestones during your recovery. Every program is structured around the specifics of your surgery, your pre-operative baseline, and what you are working toward in the long term.
We work alongside Adelaide spinal surgeons to provide pre and post-operative rehabilitation for a range of spinal procedures. Conditions and procedures we regularly manage include:
Lumbar spinal fusion rehabilitation
Microdiscectomy and disc surgery
Laminectomy and decompression surgery
Cervical spine surgery
Pre-operative strengthening (prehab)
ACDF (Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion)
Pre-operative physiotherapy, commonly called prehab, focuses on building the specific physical capacity that will support your body through surgery and the recovery that follows.
Post-operative physiotherapy is the process of progressively rebuilding strength, movement quality and confidence, within the parameters set by your surgeon, so that the outcome of your procedure is fully realised.

Pre-operative physiotherapy, commonly called prehab, focuses on getting your body in the best possible condition ahead of your procedure. At The MSK Studio in Adelaide, this means assessing where you are physically, then building a targeted program around the specific muscles and movement patterns that will matter most during your recovery. In practical terms, prehab typically involves strengthening the deep spinal stabilisers and surrounding musculature that support the operated area, addressing any existing restrictions in movement, and educating you on what to expect post-operatively, including safe movement strategies, positioning, and what the early weeks of recovery will look like. We also contact your surgeon directly to ensure our approach aligns with their protocol and the specifics of your planned procedure.
This depends on the type of procedure and your surgeon’s protocol, which is exactly why we contact your surgeon before your first appointment at The MSK Studio. For decompression procedures such as a microdiscectomy or laminectomy, post-operative physiotherapy often begins within two to three weeks of discharge. For spinal fusion, the timeline is typically more conservative in the early weeks given the bone healing required, though gentle movement and functional activity guidance usually begins sooner than most clients expect.
Your first post-operative session at our Adelaide clinic involves a clinical assessment to establish your current baseline, how you are moving, what restrictions are in place, and where your strength and function sit relative to what is expected at your stage of recovery. From there, treatment is progressive and structured in phases. Early sessions focus on safe movement retraining, gentle soft tissue work where appropriate, and ensuring you have a clear home exercise program via our app so your rehabilitation continues between appointments. As healing progresses, sessions shift toward targeted strengthening of the deep spinal stabilisers and surrounding muscles, restoring movement capacity, and building toward whatever you are aiming to return to, whether that is work, exercise, lifting, or sport. When you are ready, you will have the option to transition into our semi-private clinical exercise classes, where you continue your rehabilitation in a supported small-group environment with a maximum of four participants.
